One-year Diploma Program Geomatics Engineering Technology

Program description on main NSCC site »
What is Surveying/ Geomatics?

Surveying is the science of measuring the physical world around us to determine the shape and position of objects or features. Surveying skills are applied to a wide variety of activities, from exploration for natural resources such as oil and natural gas to determining the boundaries between parcels of land to controlling the layout of buildings and highways. To accomplish this, surveyors employ a number of technological approaches for measuring the physical world. These include both digital and analogue instruments for measuring and recording distances, angles and heights as well as advanced positioning devices such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS).

Admission requirements

Completion of the Survey Technician certificate program, or equivalent training or experience.

Who should take the Geomatics Engineering Technology Program?
Continuing Education Opportunities

Graduates from the Geomatics Engineering Technology Program could enter the Marine Geomatics Advanced Diploma at the Annapolis Valley Campus Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS). Credit transfers exist with the Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering Undergraduate degree at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.

Employment Opportunities

Typically, Geomatics Engineering Technology graduates find employment in both the private and public sectors of the Geomatics industry. This would include construction companies, private survey firms, oil and natural gas exploration companies and survey equipment sales companies. Employment opportunities are available in all provinces and territories of Canada. Also, in the past, many Geomatics Engineering Technology graduates have found employment in the USA.

Increased opportunities

Compared to the COGS one year Survey Office Technician Program, GETG graduates enjoy greater employment opportunities in terms of salary, responsibility, and percentage of graduates employed – in fact, for the last 5 years over 95% of GETG graduates have received either summer or permanent employment within one month of graduation.
